This is the procedure NCF uses to configure a TP-Link 8961ND modem out of the box or after a factory reset. To learn more about configuring your particular modem, consult the manual.

Configure as router
# Connect power and turn on the modem with the black button on the back.
# Connect an Ethernet LAN cable to one of the yellow rear ports
# In the browser's address bar, enter the IP address for the modem interface page: 192.168.1.1
# If the modem is fresh from the factory, use the default user name and password to gain access
##user: admin
##password: admin

If the modem was previously configured for someone, the password would be the previous user's DSL password. If it is unknown then do a reset to factory default, using a paper-clip in the reset hole on the back. Hold for 15 seconds to reset. The user name and password will now be as above.

# When presented with the TP-Link configuration page, select the Quick Start option at the top left.
# Select Run Wizard to proceed.
Now a window pops open and you can begin to set up the details of the interface.
# Select Next to proceed
# Set the Time Zone Eastern
# Click Next
# Set the connection type of PPPoE/PPPoA
# Click Next
# Ensure VPI is set to 0 and VCI is set to 35
# Click Next
# Verify that PPPoverEthernet PPPoE is selected
# Click Next

Continuing now to set the user name and password
# PPPoE Service name can remain blank
# PPP username in the form ab123@ncf.ca (NOTE the "@ncf.ca" part! - it will not work without that!)
# PPP Password uses DSL Password (This is not your NCF account password, but your DSL password and was provided to you when you signed up for service, it starts with "ncf...")
# Ensure that the encapsulation remains at PPPoE LLC (default)
# Click Next

Continuing now to set the wireless configuration
# Ensure Access Point indicates activated
# The SSID is set to NCF plus a random number, such as NCF_123456. It is recommended you not use your first or last name, or street address as this information is broadcast and other people in your area will be able to associate the signal with which home it is coming from.
# Broadcast SSID remains selected
# Auth Type - must be set to WPA2-PSK
...wait a moment for it to offer additional field for encryption and password...
# Set the Preshared Key to be your DSL-Password
# Click Next to Finish the wizard.

Proceed with four more steps - Setting administrator access, and wireless locale setting

VoIP Enabling
# Launch Telnet session from the computer command line.

A pop-up log-in screen appears, and asks for sign-in. Use the User-ID admin and the DSL-Password just set. Return to the same configure page you were just at.

Set daylight savings time
# In Maintenance select Time Zone.
# Daylight Saving: Enabled

Turn on SPI firewalling
# In Advanced Setup select Firewall.
# Now select Wireless in the menu below that.
# Choose Canada for the Channel Setup
# Click SAVE

Still on this page, Verify:
# The SSID in the form NCF_XXXXX or as you set.
# Ensure that PVC2 has VPI/VCI set at 0/35
# Ensure that PPPoE credentials are set properly for your user name and password.

The modem should now synchronize and connect to your DSL service if the service is operating. You may need to reboot the modem to get it to connect.

Security
Turn Off UPnP
# Click on "Access Management".

Note that the interface for the 8950 is quite different from the 8816, 8901G and the 8951ND and the set-up procedure is also quite different.

Configuring as a Router
# Connect power and turn on the modem with the black button on the back.
# Connect an Ethernet LAN cable to one of the yellow rear ports
# In the browser's address bar, enter the IP address for the modem interface page: http://192.168.1.1
If it is unknown then do a reset to factory default, using a paper-clip in the reset hole on the back. Hold for 20 seconds to reset. The user name and password will now be as above.

# When presented with the configuration page, proceed with the Quick Setup option at left.

Now set the technical details of the interface:
#Ensure VPI is set to 0 and VCI is set to 35
# Click Next
# Verify that PPPoverEthernet PPPoE is selected
# Ensure that the encapsulation remains at LLC/Snap (default)
# Click Next

Now set the credentials
# PPP username in the form ab123@ncf.ca (NOTE the "@ncf.ca" part! - it will not work without that!)
# PPP Password uses DSL Password (This is not your NCF account password, but your DSL password and was provided to you when you signed up for service, it starts with "ncf...")
# PPPoE Service name can remain blank
# Auth Method - leave as the default Auto
# The checkboxes below should all be left unselected, except the last which is Bridge PPPoE Frames
# Click Next
# No change required here - both options IGMP and WAN are left selected and service name as is.
# Click Next
# The SSID is set to NCF plus the 3 numeric characters of your ID, such as NCF_123. It is recommended you not use your first or last name or your street address as this information is broadcast and other people in your area will be able to associate the signal with which home it is coming from.
# Ensure the WPA2-PSK security option remains selected, and use your DSL Password or another strong password for the Network Key.
# Click Next
Look through the summary to ensure you have a sane configuration and commit with Save/Reboot

It is typical for some browsers to receive an Unable to Connect screen after the reset. Simply re-select the configuration page IP address to re-display the configuration menu.

Proceed with Disabling the QSS feature and Protecting the Admin interface.

Password protect the Admin Role
# Click on Management in the left side menu. Below it other options appear.
# Select Access Control and then below that Passwords
This unit supports several roles. For personal use just add protection for the Administrator role.

# Select the admin user from the pulldown list
# Under Old Password enter admin unless it was previously set to something else.
# Use the member's DSL password for the password, and confirm.
# Save the changes.

Switch on the SPI Firewall
The SPI firewall is by default off and should be turned on for better security.

#Go to Advanced Setup → LAN
#Check the box marked Enable SPI Firewall

Set the Internet Time
#Go to Management → Internet Time
#Check Automatically synchronize with Internet time servers
#Set First NTP time server to clock.fmt.he.net and Second NTP time server to clock.nyc.he.net
#Click Save/Apply

Disable QSS wireless feature
The QSS feature is disabled as it does not work and presents a minimal security risk.

# Click on the QSS feature button on the left side menu.
# Select Disable QSS
# Select Reboot to apply the change.

Disable ICMP Ping Response
Disabling the ICMP Ping response allows the modem to operate on the internet in "true stealth mode" without replying to ping requests from outside sources.

Continuing now to set the user name and password
# PPPoE Service name can remain blank
# PPP username in the form ab123@ncf.ca (NOTE the "@ncf.ca" part! - it will not work without that!)

# Set the Preshared Key to be your DSL-Password
# Click Next to Finish the wizard.

Proceed with four more steps - Setting administrator access, and wireless locale setting

VoIP Enabling
# Launch Telnet session from the computer command line.
# Enter the following commands:
## ip nat service sip sw off (press enter)
## x (press x)

Password protect the Admin Role
# Enter it once and again below to confirm
# Save the changes with Save

A pop-up log-in screen appears, and asks for sign-in. Use the User-ID admin and the DSL-Password just set. Return to the same configure page you were just at.

Set daylight savings time
# In Maintenance select Time Zone.
# Daylight Saving: Enabled

Turn on SPI firewalling
Final area setting and check
# Click Interface Setup in the top-of-page menu
# Now select Wireless in the menu below that.
# Choose Canada for the Channel Setup
# Click SAVE

Still on this page, Verify:
# The SSID in the form NCF_XXXXX or as you set.
# Click on the Internet tab
# Ensure that PVC2 has VPI/VCI set at 0/35
# Ensure that PPPoE credentials are set properly for your user name and password.

The modem should now synchronize and connect to your DSL service if the service is operating. You may need to reboot the modem to get it to connect.

The SmartRG SR505N is for use any DSL service over Bells' DSL infrastructure. NCF started selling these modems from September 2014 to members.

This is the procedure NCF uses to configure a SmartRG SR505N modem out of the box or after a factory reset. To learn more about configuring your particular modem, consult the manual.

Configure router for Dual Mode ADSL/VDSL operation
Your router can support both ADSL mode and VDSL mode. If necessary, you could switch between ADSL plans and VDSL plans without having to buy a new router or even reconfigure your existing one.

Settings for VDSL
We will start with the mode used for VDSL connections. These include the following NCF DSL Plans:
* Freedom 10/7, Unlimited
* Freedom 15/10, Unlimited
* Freedom 25/10, Unlimited
* Freedom 50/10, Unlimited

Getting Started
NOTE: If the modem is brand new, "user name: admin and password admin" will gain access. If the modem is not new, it is recommended to reset the modem to the factory defaults by holding down the reset button with a paper clip for ~10 seconds and then do step 1.

1. Once you access the modem browser at 192.168.1.1 and login (user name: admin and password admin), click the link high-lighted in red.

Advanced Setup
2. Click on the "Advanced Setup" link on the LH side of the page.

WAN Service
3. Click on the "WAN Service" link under "Advanced Setup" and then click on the "Edit" link highlighted in red.

Username Setup
4. On the 'PPP Username and Password' page, fill the username and password details in the field highlighted in red. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this page checking that "Enable Firewall" and "Enable NAT" are all checked. Click "Next".

PPPoE config save
Click on "Next"
7. Click on the "Management " link on the RH side of the page. Click on the "Access"?? subtab and then the "Passwords" sub.sub tab. Change the modem access password to NCF standard.

I need some more images to complete this - all in due time.-->
The SmartRG SR505N is for use any DSL service over Bells' DSL infrastructure.

* Freedom 10/7, Unlimited
* Freedom 15/10, Unlimited
* Freedom 25/10, Unlimited
* Freedom 50/10, Unlimited

Your NCF stats
You can see your stats as seen by NCF here. Note the date on that page that says when they were collected.

How to interpret the line stats
Bandwidth
It is normal and good for bandwidth down to be about tens times the bandwidth up. You can confirm this number by doing a speed test.

Line Attenuation
Attenuation is a measure of how strong the signal is from the Bell office ('DSLAM'). Note that Lower is better as it indicates less attenuation.

Attenuation (dB)

Rating

0 to 40 dB

Excellent

40 to 50 dB

Good

50 to 60 dB

Fair

> 60 db

Poor

Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR or SN Margin)
Signal-to-Noise is a measure of noise on your line. Too much noise can obscure the DSL signal. Higher is better as it means you have more signal than noise.

Signal-to-Noise (dB)

Rating

> 20 dB

Excellent

10 to 20 dB

Good

6 to 10 dB

Fair

0 to 6 db

Poor

Errors
The error figures are an indication of how many packets had to be retransmitted because they contained an error and is caused by line noise. The error counts are cumulative since the time DSL sync was last obtained. To reset the error counts, do a software restart of your modem, or power cycle your modem, or disconnect your DSL line for a minute or two.

The significance of error counts is unclear and may not be significant. Some modems may misreport errors and even with errors, your service may be fine.

This is the procedure NCF uses to configure a TP-Link 8901G modem out of the box or after a factory reset.

# When presented with the TP-Link configuration page, select the Quick Setup option at the top left.
# Select Run Wizard to proceed.
Now a window pops open and you can begin to set up the details of the interface.
# Select Next to proceed
# Set the Time Zone Eastern
# Click Next
# Set the connection type of PPPoE/PPPoA
# Click Next
# Ensure VPI is set to 0 and VCI is set to 35
# Click Next
# Verify that PPPoverEthernet PPPoE is selected
# Click Next

Continuing now to set the user name and password
# PPPoE Service name can remain blank
# PPP username in the form ab123@ncf.ca (NOTE the "@ncf.ca" part! - it will not work without that!)
# PPP Password uses DSL Password (This is not your NCF account password, but your DSL password and was provided to you when you signed up for service, it starts with "ncf...")
# Ensure that the encapsulation remains at PPPoE LLC (default)
# Click Next

Continuing now to set the wireless configuration
# Ensure Access Point indicates activated
# The SSID is set to NCF plus the 3 numeric characters of your ID, such as NCF_123.

# Set Encryption Type to be AES
# Set the Preshared Key to be your DSL-Password
# Click Next to Finish the wizard.

Proceed with four more steps - Setting administrator access, and wireless locale setting

Password protect the Admin Role
# Click on Maintenance in the menu along the top of the page. Below it other options appear.
# Select Administration
# For the admin user use your DSL-Password or another strong password.
# Enter it once and again below to confirm
# Save the changes with Save

A pop-up log-in screen appears, and asks for sign-in. Use the User-ID admin and the DSL-Password just set. Return to the same configure page you were just at.

Set daylight savings time
# In Maintenance select Time Zone.
# Daylight Saving: Enabled

Turn on SPI firewalling
# In Advanced Setup select Firewall.
# SPI: Enabled

Final area setting and check
# Click Interface Setup in the top-of-page menu
# Now select Wireless in the menu below that.
# Choose Canada for the Channel Setup
# Click SAVE

Still on this page, Verify:
# The SSID in the form NCF_XXXXX or as you set.
# The Auth Type is WPA2-PSK
# The Encryption Type is AES and key is DSL-Password
# Click on the Internet tab
# Ensure that PVC2 has VPI/VCI set at 0/35
# Ensure that PPPoE credentials are set properly for your user name and password.

The modem should now synchronize and connect to your DSL service if the service is operating. You may need to reboot the modem to get it to connect.

Security
In January 2014 it was revealed that some models of TP-Link modem, including this model, are subject to hacking if they are running out dated firmware and if the remote access (ACL) is set to allow remote access. This web page provides more detailed information on the vulnerability. Latest firmware versions can be checked on the TP-Link website.

Some older TP-Link modems were shipped from the factory with the ACL activated. This should be checked and if activated then deactivated at Access Management → ACL.
This is the procedure NCF uses to configure a TP-Link 8951ND modem out of the box or after a factory reset.

Newsgroups are no longer supported by NCF

You can search for specific newsgroups, like comp.lang.python, on Google.

What are newsgroups?
Newsgroups were an early feature of NCF (and the internet). They operate like a 'virtual bulletin board', where people can post and reply to messages. Typically a newsgroup is dedicated to a particular topic. There are hundreds of newsgroups at NCF and over 15,000 newsgroups on the internet.

Newsgroups were popular in the early days of the internet, but spam (unwanted junk posting from advertisers) and the development of easier-to-use web-based alternatives have diminished their stature and popularity.

How do I read newsgroups?
To view or post to a newsgroup, you need software called a 'newsreader', which is built into some mail readers.

After configuring your mail or newsreader (the link is to old material but pending replacement, it gives the basic idea), you can open a newsgroup simply by clicking on a link to it or by selecting it from within your reader. Getting set up to use newsgroups is like using an email program. It takes some work to set up, but is easy to use thereafter.

NCF's news server is news.ncf.ca and requires your NCF account ID and password. If you are connected directly through our modem pool, you can read all the newsgroups NCF has available. If you are connected through another provider, you can read all NCF (ncf.*) newsgroups via our news server. You can also read any non-NCF newsgroups through your other provider's news server.

Please note that due to its age, this NCF service is no longer maintained and may be discontinued without warning if the ancient hardware it runs on fails.

Fy974: /* Port forwarding on TP-Link modems */

Port forwarding allows you to sign into a local computer network from outside, via the internet and carry out tasks on the network, such as editing documents, changing configurations or printing.

To accomplish this your DSL modem has to be manually configured to allow port forwarding.

Caution
Port forwarding has distinct security implications and should not be undertaken unless you understand that you are opening your local area network to the open internet. You need to either control access or understand what you have opened access to.

Port forwarding on TP-Link modems
Setting up port forwarding on TP-Link 8816, 8901, 8951, and 8961 model modems is a relatively simple task.

1. Sign into your DSL modem web interface and go to Advanced Setup → NAT.

2. Select a new Virtual Circuit.

3. Set the rule index to "1" to establish the first rule.

4. Set a name for the application under "Application" (Note: you can choose suggestions from the pull down menu or enter your own name for it manually).

5. Set the port(s) to be opened from "Start port number" and "End port number". (Note: if the same port number is designated under "start" and "end" then only that port will be opened.

6. Set the local IP address of the destination under "Local IP address".

7. Continue to set further rules, if required. These will all appear on the virtual server listing.

Notes:

*The modem will retain these forwards when powered off or when rebooted.
*Rules can be manually edited later to amend them.
*A "factory reset" of the modem to default settings (by putting a pin in the hole on the back of the modem for 20 seconds) will eliminate all port forwards set up.
Configure as bridge
Do this only if you prefer to use your own external router rather than the one built into your TP-Link unit.

# Connect power and turn on the modem with the button on the back.

If it is unknown then do a reset to factory default, press the reset/Wi-Fi button on the back. Hold for 6 to 9 seconds to reset. The user name and password will now be as above.
